What Is Microneedling?
Microneedling is a minimally invasive skin‐rejuvenation procedure and a major innovation in aesthetics for the treating the appearance of fine lines and acne scars, and for the improvement of the skin’s texture, tone and color.
Microneedling is a safe, chemical‐free skin‐rejuvenation method that triggers new collagen production. Because it can be performed on all skin colors and types, it is sometimes the
preferred treatment over laser, becasue there is no risk of burning the patient.
What Are the Benefits?
The benefits of microneedling can include a reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and younger‐looking skin with fewer signs of aging.
The procedure may also have a positive effect on the appearance of hyper‐pigmentation, hypopigmentation, acne scars, traumatic scars and stretch marks while also creating a fresher appearance or glow to the skin.
What Areas of the Body Can Be Treated?
Microneedling may be used on all parts of the body, including the face, neck, décolleté, arms, hands, legs, abdomen and back.
How Is the Procedure Done?
First, we will apply a thin layer of sterile saline to your skin.
Next, in a single motion, a small cordless device that resembles a pen with a number of fine needles at the end will be gently pressed against the skin (as demonstrated in the video above) while simultaneously gliding in one direction, until the entire treatment area has been covered. The needles are used to puncture the skin and create a controlled skin injury.
Each puncture creates a channel that triggers the body to fill these microscopic wounds by producing new collagen and elastin. Through the process of neovascularization and neocollagenesis, there is improvement in skin texture and firmness, as well as a reduction in scars, pore size and stretch marks.
What Does It Feel Like?
The sensation associated with microneedling feels like having light sandpaper being moved across your skin.
While some areas are more sensitive than others, the speed of the reciprocating tip reduces discomfort, and the applied hydrating gel also makes the treatment more tolerable.
How Long Does the Procedure Take?
The procedure takes 15‐30 minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated.
What Is the Downtime?
Immediately after the treatment, you will notice a bright redness to the skin.
The total healing time depends on the exact nature of your procedure and the number of overlapping passes your skin‐care professional performs. On average, patients experience a light sunburn look for two to four days. However, many patients heal completely in as little as 24 hours.
When Will I See the Results?
Patients notice an immediate “glow” to their skin. Visible changes to the skin develop over the course of several days and weeks, and results can continue to improve up to six months.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
Some patients require only a single treatment once per year to achieve optimal results. However, it is recommended that most patients to receive a series of two to three treatments, spaced about six to eight weeks apart.
For patients with deep wrinkles, advanced photo‐aging, stretch marks or acne scars, it is recommended to receive six to eight sessions at six‐week intervals.
Microneedling with PRP
Another exciting option for performing the microneedling process involves simultaneously injecting some of the client’s own blood into the skin, a procedure known as microneedling with platelet-rich plasma (PRP).
Why Use Blood?
Although blood is mainly a liquid (called plasma), it also contains small solid components (red cells, white cells and platelets). The platelets are best known for their importance in clotting blood. However, platelets also contain hundreds of proteins called growth factors, which are very important in the normal healing of injuries.
These growth factors work like magic to create increased collagen and new blood flow. To rejuvenate new skin, these growth factors are injected back into your skin during the microneedling procedure.
To perform the PRP option, a small amount of blood must first be drawn from a patient. Platelets are separated from other blood cells and their concentration is increased during a process called centrifugation. Then the increased concentration of platelets is then combined with the remaining blood and used in the microrneedling procedure.
